The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is a comprehensive rehabilitation center including a 35-bed CARF-accredited TBI unit located on the 2nd floor of Jackson Memorial Medical Center. This unit is under the direction of Dr. Gemayaret Alvarez. Inpatients with TBI are seen by an interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals. Therapy services are comprehensive and are state-of-the-art. Consultants include physiatry, urology, orthopedics, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, therapeutic recreation, case management, and vocational services. Patients participate in a full complement of rehabilitation therapies designed to optimize their functional potential using a team-oriented approach. To guide this process and ensure progress is being made toward common goals, weekly interdisciplinary team conferences using a problem-oriented approach are held for all TBI patients, as well as a family conference. To provide funding for rehabilitation and continuity of care, patients are connected with the Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury program. Discharge planning is initiated early in the process, with a goal of appropriately hastening independent living in their home environment and community re-integration.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services and Community Integration A lifetime follow-up system exists for outpatients with TBI. TBI patients are routinely scheduled for follow-up medical and rehabilitation management visits post-discharge. These follow-up visits occur 1 and 6 months post-discharge, and then annually or more frequently if needed. To supplement these visits, patients also continue with outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychotherapy. Weekly out-patient team meetings are held with Dr. Alvarez to keep close track of patient progress after discharge. Vocational education and counseling and therapeutic recreation are also available and provided to outpatients with TBI.
